Faith Dempsey is considered one of Australia’s key players within the mining industry, highly respected for her unparalleled logistics management expertise and sharp commercial acumen. Faith has 40 years experience in the Australian and Indonesian coal industries and founded TransCoal in 1999 to leverage her intricate knowledge of Queensland’s rail and port systems and pioneer a smarter logistics service to mining organisations.
Over her career, Faith has been involved in the start-up of four greenfield coal projects where she established procedures for scheduling wash plants, train loadouts, stockpiles, rail and port operations. Faith played a pivotal role in the establishment of Jellinbah Resources in the position of Manager, Marketing and Marketing Services and also worked for Utah Development Company/BHP-Utah Coal as Commercial Officer (Marketing) for nine years.
Faith’s contribution to the mining industry has been recognised through a number of awards, including the Queensland Business Review Women in Business Award for ‘Transport and Storage’. Faith broke new ground when she was named the first female to secure the sought after AUSCIT/NEDO traineeship and went on to becoming the first female to negotiate with the Brazilian Steel Mills joint coal purchase cartel.
Faith is also known for the results she delivered while serving as the inaugural Chairperson of the Blackwater User Group where rail freight for the group was reduced by 30% under her leadership.
Chief Executive Officer
Paddy has 17 years experience in mining and in that time gained a unique range of experiences within the coal industry encompassing senior operational roles, corporate strategy, performance turn-around, greenfields developments and M&A.
Apart from the operational-centric perspective that Paddy brings to TransCoal, he is able to combine his analytical and problem solving capacity with the bulk commodity expertise in TransCoal to provide a real opportunity for step-change improvements across the supply chain and more value-adding services to TransCoal’s clients.
General Manager - Operations
Benno is a supply chain professional with extensive experience in operational leadership of teams of up to 120 in the logistical management of resource supply chains. With over 10 years experience, Benno began his career with Xstrata Alloys in South Africa after completing his Ph.d., M.Sc., BSc. (Hon.), with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and MBA with North-West University Potchefstroom before migrating to Australia to work with Xstrata Coal. Benno was responsible for the transport and logistics of Xstrata’s northern coal mines in Queensland and the implementation of a Business Systems Project comprising a pit-to-port Manufacturing Execution System and an advance planning system in Xstrata Coal Queensland.
Logistics & Office Manager
Craig brings to the TransCoal team 31 years Logistic and Contractual expertise in the Queensland coal industry. In his role for TransCoal, Craig provides logistic/marketing support to QCoal’s various Mines to facilitate the export of coal through Abbot Point terminal. Craig’s diverse background gives him a thorough understanding of the logistics chain which he leverages on behalf of TransCoal clients.
From 1988 to 2009, Craig held a variety of management roles with international trading company Marubeni involving the logistics for large scale supply projects and the marketing/trading of a diverse range of commodities worldwide including coal, and the administration of contracts.
Prior to that Craig spent 8 years with the A.C.T.A shipping responsible for the Import / Export Intermodal freight of general and frozen goods to worldwide destinations and maintenance of shipping equipment throughout Queensland and the Pacific Islands.
Lyn has over 10 years of logistics expertise in forecasting, scheduling, coal quality and all commercial aspects of the coal chain in both QLD and NSW mine and port operations.
Lyn began her coal career with Peabody before moving to Vale as Logistics Principal for 7 years. Lyn has sat on a number of industry groups and spent 2 years as chair of the SOMM for the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain.
More recently Lyn worked for the International Trading company Trafigura in Coal Operations handling all Australian Coal shipments.
Prior to joining the mining industry, she worked with Ansett Airlines as Operations Manager for a number of years.
David has over 10 years experience within the Queensland shipping industry as an agent, broker, and in port operations.
Commencing as an agent for Inchcape Shipping Services in Brisbane, David worked with petroleum product tankers for both BP and Caltex Australia and to the lesser extent Newhope Coal shipments.
Moving to Gladstone, David was involved with petroleum however with increasing focus on coal shipments for Mitsui OSK Line and NYK.
Moving on from agency work, David was involved chartering for Anderson Hughes based in Brisbane but primarily working in metal concentrates for customers in Indonesia.
After 3 years, commenced as a scheduler/planner for SMIT Lamnalco towage based in Gladstone who had just won the exclusive contract for towage services. Overseeing the fleet expand from 6 vessels to 11, David was part of the day to day towage planning for the port; as well as the challenges posed by the Curtis Island LNG and the growth of the port as a whole.
Hong has been actively involved in the industrial minerals and commodities trading business for the last 10 years.
Initially starting his career in steel industry, he led various teams in market development, procurement, distribution, and sales of mineral ores and coals.
Recently he has spent 7 years with coal trading and investment firm AMCI, in various locations including US, Hong Kong and Australia with focus on trading operations involving steel and aluminium-related materials.
Hong brings extensive network in the Asian region and knowledge base to the overall coal logistics operations.
Fiona is a coal technical specialist with over 20 years’ experience in coal quality, coal utilisation and project analysis for major international coal production and consulting companies.
She has in-depth knowledge of metallurgical coal and coke-making, with knowledge and experience of steelworks in Australia, Asia, America and Europe.
She is experienced in project evaluation, combining her technical experience and knowledge of operations and marketing with project analysis to assist with project evaluation and decision making.
Eva is a highly skilled and resourceful logistics specialist, operations and project management professional. Before joining TransCoal, Eva was responsible for managing the logistics requirement of medium to large mining and engineering contracts, sales negotiation and managing the movement of project cargo, machinery and oversize plant equipment for over 10 years. She has extensive logistics knowledge including some complex phases through the international supply chain.
Eva has a Master degree at Environmental Management and also BSc majoring in Chemistry. This educational background, along with her project management skills and logistics knowledge make her a valuable asset to the TransCoal team.
Joanne is responsible for processing timely laytime calculations and managing demurrage and despatch settlements for TransCoal clients. Joanne brings to the table over 20 years experience in the Australian coal industry with specific skills which sees her successfully liaise with coal producers, ship owners, coal buyers with finesse.
Joanne is known for her Statement of Fact interpretations which attribute accurate laytime sharing between shippers on shared vessels and in complex despatch/demurrage settlements.
Prior to her work with TransCoal, Joanne worked in various roles for international trading company Mitsui & Co for eleven years in the area of importing and exporting bulk materials. In this position Joanne liaised between importers and exporters to manage the business’ logistics programs and commercial documentation from contracts to commercial invoices. Joanne made her mark in this role through achieving excellent customer relations feedback within a multicultural business environment.
Despatch/demurrage Shipping Officer
Renée is responsible for managing TransCoal’s international despatch/demurrage clients. With more than 16 years’ international experience in sales and shipping management gained within the mining and bulk handling facilities in South Africa and Australia, Renee’s greatest professional strength is her ability to analyse and argue points of contract on behalf of her clients.
Since 2009, Renée has specialised in Despatch/Demurrage Management of mixed commodities on the international market. Through her experience and exposure to various products she has learned the importance of delivering value, strong processes, open communication and a focused approach. Renee previously held a senior role with Rio Tinto.
Felicia joins the team as Logistics Administrator to provide support for TransCoal and its clients. Her commercial background has seen her through varied accounting/finance roles with various mining operations including a Sales and Shipping officer with Rio Tinto where she gained knowledge of coal shipping, laytime and logistics. Felicia has established strong commercial accounting processes in the mining industry and her extensive organisational skills and timely manner makes her a valuable member of the TransCoal team.
Mark is a highly skilled logistics specialist having held key roles in mine, rail and port sectors over a 36 year period. Roles have encompassed leadership, strategy development, redesign of processes/structures and management of budgets focusing strongly on delivering value through a focus on performance and identifying resolving constraints in supply chains.
Mark has experience working with Aurizon Network, BMA, BMC and Queensland Rail (QR Network) underpins extensive knowledge and skills in rail and port infrastructure management, coal supply chains and various operational management capabilities for a wide range of infrastructure assets.
Mark has been a key Contributor to the Aurizon Network and the BMA & BMC Coal Supply Chain performance and strategy across the Central Queensland coal systems. These roles have developed essential operational, management and administrative skills in managing teams, safety, budgeting, compliance, project management, contract management, capacity forecasting, planning, reporting and leadership.
John Edge is a respected Queensland coal industry expert respected across Australia for his unique blend of expertise in rail, shipping and contract administration. John joined TransCoal as General Manager in 2000 and provides invaluable logistics support to TransCoal clients, particularly Jellinbah and Lake Vermont mines.
John’s extensive experience in maritime operations coupled with his trading background and knowledge of Queensland’s coal ports give him an inside perspective into the buying process which he leverages for the benefit of TransCoal clients.
John previously worked with Utah Development Company/BHP-Utah Coal for 18 years where he was responsible for coal sales contracts, marketing support and the scheduling of BHP-Utah coal exported through the Ports of Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Gladstone.
From 1990 to 1999, John held the role of Administration Manager at Queensland Bulk Handling, overseeing the logistics operations of the Brisbane Coal Terminal and the Brisbane Woodchip Terminal.
