Faith Dempsey Managing Director

Faith DempseyFaith has 32 years experience in the Australian and Indonesian coal industries. As founder of TransCoal in 1999, Faith’s expertise extends to mine start ups where she has played integral roles in establishing processes and procedures for scheduling wash plants, train loadouts, stockpiles, rail and port operations for four greenfield coal projects. Previously Manager, Marketing & Marketing Services for Jellinbah Resources Pty Ltd., she was responsible for all coal sale contracts, railing, shipping, commercial documentation, foreign exchange & trade finance. Faith also spent 9 years with Utah Development Company/BHP-Utah Coal in their marketing department as Commercial Officer.


Faith served as Chairperson of the Blackwater Users Group (a committee of representatives from 10 mines, 2 power stations, Queensland Rail and the Gladstone Port Authority) from 1996 to 1998.


In April 2007, Faith was the recipient of the 2007 Queensland Business Review, Women in Business Award for Transport. As a central player in the evolution of the Gladstone rail/port system, Faith's unparalleled knowledge and expertise enables TransCoal to provide an streamlined service in coordinating the transport of coal from mine site to the export market.



John Edge General Manager

John EndgeJohn has 40 years experience in the Queensland coal industry in railing, shipping and contract administration.


During an 18 year period with Utah Development Company/BHP-Utah Coal Pty Ltd, he progressed from Shipping Officer in the initial stages of the Hay Point Coal Terminal development to Manager, Marketing Contracts Administration in the Brisbane Office. In this latter position, John was responsible for the preparation and execution of all coal sales contracts, Marketing commercial support and the scheduling of all BHP-Utah coal exported through the Ports of Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Gladstone from the eight mines operating at that time.


From 1990 to 1999, John was employed as Administration Manager, Queensland Bulk Handling Pty Ltd., overseeing the inloading/stockpiling/export operations of the Brisbane Coal Terminal as well as the Brisbane Woodchip Terminal.



Craig Smith Logistics Manager

Craig SmithCraig has over 30 years experience in the shipping and contract administration.


During a 21 year period with Marubeni Australia Ltd (a major international trading company), he progressed from marketing and logistic staff for the General Merchandise and Coal Departments to Manager of their Brisbane Branch. Craig was involved in the import, export and marketing of a variety of products including coal and as well as the detailed administration of Purchase and Sales contracts.


From 1980 to 1988, Craig was employed with Associated Container Transportation of Australia in a variety of operational roles involving import / export of goods from USA and Europe and control of shipping equipment throughout Queensland and the Pacific Islands.



Leona Van Laerhoven Logistics Manager

Leona Van LaerhovenLeona has over 30 years of experience in corporate and small/medium business ranging across areas of management, finance, administration and operations.


Leona began her career in the banking and finance sector and was part of the training team seeing the introduction of on-line branch computers in the early 1980’s. From 1985 to 1991, Leona jointly managed two businesses providing contract services to the plastics fabrication industry.

During her last 18 years, Leona was employed by Queensland Bulk Handling Pty Ltd (QBH) who is the operator of the Brisbane Coal Export Terminal. Leona’s position at QBH as Administration Manager / Accountant / Commercial and Operational Systems offered her a unique and diverse role performing administrative, financial, terminal and operational management for the Coal and Woodchip Export Terminals. In particular, Leona applied her diverse experience in the area of business improvement to focus on operational systems. Leona also brings with her a wide exposure to various Contract negotiations and administration. Leona joined TransCoal on 29 November 2010.



Joanne Bartholomew Despatch/Demurrage Officer

Joanne BartholomewJoanne has 17 years experience in the Australian coal industry. Joanne held various positions within Mitsui & Co, a multi national trading company, in Brisbane. Her 11 year contribution covered all areas of international importing and exporting though principally in bulk materials.


Joanne maintained the day to day communications between importers and exporters to ensure the efficient implementation of logistics and all levels of commercial documentation from contracts to commerical invoices. She was responsible for maintaining excellent customer relations within a multicultural business environment.


Since 2002, Joanne has concentrated solely on Despatch / Demurrage Management for TransCoal. Joanne maintains regular communication with coal terminals, exporters, importers, traders and port agents to prioritise timely delivery of laytime calculations. Her expertise is in Statement of Fact interpretation in order to attribute correct laytime sharing between shippers on common/shared vessels and in the complex settlement of such Despatch/Demurrage.



Danny Canfyn Logistic Superintendent

Danny CanfynDanny has over 14 years experience in the maritime industry.


Danny started his career in the Royal Australian Navy specialising in communications and served time at sea on the now-decommissioned HMAS Brisbane. After four years of service, Danny converted to civilian life and continued to strengthen his knowledge in the shipping industry. Within a few short years, Danny progressed from working as a container control clerk, to the demanding role as an agent for a fast-growing shipping agency. He worked at many ports along the Eastern Coast of Australia, including 2 years servicing coal vessels at Dalrymple Bay, Hay Point and Bowen.

After 7 years in the agency, Danny broadened his operations and logistics experience knowledge through a marine pilotage agency servicing the Torres Strait and Great Barrier Reef. After 18 months pursuing personal endeavours overseas, Danny started his employment with Transcoal on the 4 October, 2010. Danny looks forward to applying his logistic management skills in a new way and seeing the industry from a different perspective whilst servicing old and new clients.
